Since 1987, SXSW has brought in tens of thousands of attendees each year– and this number continues to grow as the event gains more publicity and stardom. For local merchants, SXSW is a great event for their businesses. However, for the rest of us, it can be a huge hindrance, as traffic quadruples, Uber surge prices are at its highest, and the large crowds make it extremely difficult to get into the downtown area. Where do we go when SXSW is invading our city? Here is your chance to explore the great sights that the surrounding areas of Austin have to offer:
Take a hike at the Greenbelt
Just off of the Capital of Texas Highway is the Barton Creek Greenbelt, one of the city’s most hidden attractions. The 12.68-mile trail provides for great hiking and biking. And when there’s enough water, the trails lead you to swimming holes for a great afternoon spent at this urban oasis.
A trip to the original Salt Lick in Driftwood
Forget about Franklin’s if you’re craving BBQ when SXSW is invading the city. Instead, why not make it a great evening and take a 30-minute drive to Driftwood, Texas, where the original Salt Lick BBQ is located? Not only will you not have to wait in line, but the slow-cooked meats, delicious sides, and their homemade breads make this BYOB BBQ the perfect place to enjoy an evening away from SXSW.
Shop at The Domain
Spend the day at The Domain in North Austin to treat yourself on a massive shopping spree! The huge selection of stores, ranging from designer boutiques to mainstream department stores will leave you with plenty of bags, a great workout from walking around, and of course, a satisfied stomach from the wide varieties of restaurants! Now that’s what we call a perfect day.
Check out Hamilton Pool
If you haven’t been to Hamilton Pool yet, you’re missing out on one of the most beautiful spots in the lone star state. Residing in a small canyon, this natural spring will leave you in awe. Take in the fresh air and explore the natural ambiance that Hamilton Pool and its surrounding environment has to offer.
Enjoy a cold beer at Jester King Brewery
Instead of fighting the SXSW crowds, kick back and relax with a fresh brew at Jester King Brewery. And don’t worry about leaving the kids at home– tours are free and open to all ages! Located 18 miles from downtown, this secluded spot will be the ideal activity to avoid the hordes of tourists.
This year, don’t take the time to hibernate when tropical storm SXSW comes rushing in. Instead, go explore the unique places encircling this wondrous city!
