Austin, Texas is a hub for creatives, hippies, artists, and musicians. Being the live music capital of the world, the city is booming just about every night of the week. Zilker Park, along with beautiful Texas weather, offers opportunity for festivals and other large events downtown. It’s already been a busy week, and Austin is going to be buzzing this weekend, so we thought we’d catch you up on what’s going on in case you don’t have any plans!
MiddleLands
This medieval-themed music festival is growing year by year, as it is much more than a music festival. MiddleLands is a weekend-long camping adventure in the renaissance age, including: art galleries, rides (or “exhilarating mechanical contraptions” as the medievals would call them), food trucks, beauty bars and many other exciting activities. Featuring performances by Phantogram, Major Lazer, Rae Sremmurd, Galantis and many more, the Texas Renaissance Festival Fair Grounds will be an experience of the ages. You can experience this voyage into the mystical forest of medieval costumes and futuristic music May 5–7 for a price of $205 for GA tickets, $410 for VIP. Single day passes for Friday, Saturday and Sunday are $95 for GA, and $185 for VIP.
Derby in the City
You don’t have to be in Kentucky to experience this Derby. Making its third lap at the Austin American-Statesman, on May 6th, Derby in the City showcases the Kentucky Derby on the jumbotron, paired with Austin’s favorite type of entertainment: live music. With Citizen Cope, Black Pistol Fire, Sweet Spirit and more, this event is something for all ages—so grab the whole family! GA are $45, and kids under the age of 10 are free. Gates open at 1:30 p.m., so trot out your floppy hats and pastels because it’s time for the Austin (Kentucky) Derby!
Pecan Street Festival
The 40th annual Pecan Street Festival is popping up on old Pecan Street (6th St) this weekend. Starting at 11:00 a.m., on both Saturday and Sunday, and featuring over 300 artisan vendors, three stages of live music, a multitude of carnival rides—and, of course—FOOD, there is something to enjoy for each member of the family. The festival is free to the public, presenting performances by Riders Against the Storm, Brainwave, Fort Never and many more.
