Hi! I’m Dajin Kim and I’m excited to announce my position as the new Social Media and Marketing Intern at HMG Creative! As a senior studying advertising at the University of Texas, the opportunity to get real-world experience and learn from the talented group of people at HMG is invaluable to me. I’m more than excited to kick off my last semester of college with a chance to show off everything I’ve learned from the classes I actually woke up on time for. So here’s me:

Right now I’m entering the last semester of college as an Advertising Major. I’m borderline addicted to caffeine, always eating past 2 am, and constantly eating (seriously, I got an award for that). I’m also a Recruitment Director for my spirit organization at UT called Texas Pearls.

During my junior year of college I interned at an e-commerce company Volusion as an SEO Writing Intern. This gave me great experience as it taught me how to optimize my writing to help promote businesses online. By creating SEO optimized blogs, product descriptions, page descriptions, resource articles, and more, I was able to further advance my ability to alter my tone according to differing target audiences. With such a wide range of clientele, I got some great experience exercising my creative writing skills. As senior year came around, I decided to take a break and spend some time to focus on my studies and school organizations.

As much as I love the creative industry, I didn’t come into college knowing that I would be in it.

Much like any high schooler at the time, I found my major by searching through endless “10 Best Careers to Get Into” articles. I went in with my heart fully set (or as set as a stressed, rushed high schooler can be) on majoring in Biology and going to Pharmacy school. At the time, it didn’t seem like a bad choice. Around my sophomore year of college, as I got closer and closer to having to take Organic Chemistry, I turned a complete 180 degrees and took a chance on advertising. Now I’ll admit that there have been a few times I’ve been deemed as being “dramatic” by my friends, but I am in no way exaggerating when I say that this decision changed my life.

Not only did this revelation lead me to where I am today, but it also gave me a clear answer to the dreaded interview question, “What is your greatest passion?” I can say with utmost confidence that I had no remote clue up until a couple years ago. I changed my answer every time constantly switching between responses like “music” and “volunteering.” I can now confidently say that I have found a passion in writing. I’ve discovered that great writing is not characterized by the complexity of the words you use but in the efficient arrangement of simple words. I’ve always compared this challenge to expressing a driving rain of thought into a single drop of rain. I realized that writing was my passion because the more frustrating and challenging it got, the more I loved it and the more I wanted to be better at it.

In the future, I’d love to pursue a career in the creative industry as a copywriter. Creative problem solving and writing all in one job seems like my cup of tea (probably more like boba tea). I love to be in dynamic workplaces where the challenges around me are constantly changing. For now, I guess you’ll see me blogging or playing Monopoly Deal in my favorite coffee shops Summer Moon, Thunderbird, or really any coffee shop in Austin that has lots of windows and sunshine. Probably with plans to eat at Patrizi’s or Gus’s after.
