Since our last blog post regarding the COVID-19 virus, from March 13, 2020, we have seen the #socialdistancing phenomenon emerge, a recommendation to limit gatherings to 50 people and then to 10 people, and now we just have to stay inside. We’ve seen the closure of “non-essential” businesses across the country and already, we are seeing business closures and grocery store droughts happening across Austin. The City of Austin recently prohibited gatherings of over 10 people inside and outside (with the exception of governmental, educational, and medical spaces) and sit-ins at restaurants, bars, cafes, etc. Businesses are limited to providing to-go services only. Because Austin is a major hub for the food and drink industry, especially during the SXSW season, local businesses are suffering more than ever. As Austinites, we want to help as much as possible.

• Stand With Austin Fund – created to receive charitable donations to support nonprofits assisting individuals and small businesses most negatively impacted by the cancellation of SXSW.
• Austin Virtual Tip Jar – this Google Spreadsheet includes Venmos and Paypals of service industry workers in Austin who’ve been furloughed or let go by their places of employment.
• The Central Texas Food Bank – we recognize that not everyone holds the privilege to dine out. Consider donating to a local food bank as well, so that everyone can be fed.

Shop Local Businesses that are Still Open

Many businesses remain open through to-go orders, delivery, and curbside pickup. Now is the time to treat yourself and support some of your favorite local businesses a well! Here is a list of local restaurants offering takeout and delivery. Remember to be extra courteous to service industry workers during this difficult time. If you have the means, consider being a part of the #tipfortwo movement, it’ll certainly make someone’s day!

Whether your favorite businesses are open or not, you can support them by buying a gift card now, to use for later. This will ensure some cash flow to provide immediate relief. You can buy a gift card directly through Give Local’s list of restaurants on their website.
