Ever see those stacks of books people have in guest bathrooms at their homes? Home décor magazines, outdated tabloids and self-help books may come to mind. You might even be guilty of having a large (and growing) stack in your own bathroom. We present to you an alternative: Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader. What is it, you may ask? Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader is a series of books filled with short articles chock full of trivia ranging from history to sports to pop culture—and they’re funny, too. But despite its name, Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader isn’t only for the porcelain throne. Leave the book on your living room table for guests to peruse, or bring it with you on a long family car ride for some laughs along the way.
The idea was conceived in 1987 when Uncle John himself was “stranded on his throne with nothing to read.” Since then, Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader has accumulated a membership base of over 40,000 readers and has more than 10 million books in print. The “Bathroom Readers’ Institute,” as they call it, is made up of two small groups of trivia gurus who rack as many viable resources as they can to find the best facts, trivia and knowledge. Take a look at their Wikipedia Page to learn even more about this one-of-a-kind company. Who ever thought bathroom reading could be so profitable?
While Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader clearly didn’t need our help selling their product, they did need help revamping their outdated website. HMG to the rescue! As such a fun company, it deserved a website that matched their upbeat and lively culture. Using WordPress, we took matters into our own hands and built them a fully responsive website. To further enhance the site’s look and feel, we updated their logo and brand colors to reflect a more contemporary and recent brand. Also, we leveraged WooCommerce, a WordPress extension, to display Uncle John’s collection of books for purchase right on the site. Last but not least, we implemented their blog posts right on the website, along with direct integration of their social media platforms.
Check out Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader for yourself, and maybe you’ll even find yourself buying a copy once you read more about the product. Let us know what you think! Bonus: you get to throw out your old magazines and de-clutter, so it’s a win-win situation.
