HMG Recs: What We’ve Been Loving Lately

Many of us are still adjusting to the lifestyle of working from home and putting our social lives on pause. Our living rooms have turned into our gyms and our kitchen tables have become work stations. Let’s be honest, the most fun some of us are having is going to the grocery store twice a month. It can be really difficult to find a good work-life balance when our homes and our workspaces are morphed into one. It’s important that we take time out of our days to unwind and have some fun. So, we’ve come up with a few recommendations for some entertainment that we think you’ll love.

ACL Festival: What Your Really Need To Know

October is here, and you know what that means: ACL fest is back! For the next two weekends, Zilker Park will be transformed into a live music haven. With a lineup featuring headliners like Drake, Foo Fighters, The Weeknd, and The Strokes, it is surely one you do not want to miss. First things first, get a plan together: The last thing you want to do is miss a band you wanted to see, or lose someone in your group. Rather than trying to decide on the fly, take a few minutes before you get to the show and get in a huddle and make a “game plan.” The day-by-day schedule is available, so get together, make a plan, and stick to it. This will take away a lot of the stress that can come from arguing at the park about who to go see, for how long, etc. PRO TIP: Don’t try to see half of one show and half of another. Instead, pick one show (yes, this is not an easy decision) and stay for the whole time. This will allow you to have one epic hour of music, with a nice view, rather than two twenty minute shows, with a ten minute sprint in between landing you in the back of both shows. Be smart with your packing: Before leaving for the festival, be sure to review all the restrictions that ACL has on items being brought into the park.

HMG must haves:

  • Sunscreen
  • Water bottle
  • Sunglasses
  • Camera/Phone for pictures and videos

SXSW Wrap-Up: The Best of the Best

Just like that, that’s a wrap of SXSW 2015. We had a great time checking out Interactive panels and keynotes, some films, and great bands in the sun (and a lot of rain). To wrap it up, we will be running two blogs: this one on awards and then an upcoming one on top speakers. Two of the most important awards for Interactive honor incredibly innovative companies, products, and startups. The SXSW Accelerator Startup Competition has 48 technology companies go head-to-head in a two-day competition with six winners, while the SXSW Interactive Innovation Awards focuses on evolving and broadening trends of the digital industry, giving out fourteen awards and four special honors.

Our Tips for Surviving SXSW 2015

SXSW is easily one of the most exciting weeks of the year in Austin. However, it can also be loud and confusing, making it very important to plan ahead. If you’re well prepared, you’ll have no problem catching all – or at least most – of the sets, shows, films, and speakers you want. It will also be easier to meet up with friends or colleagues if you know where you’ll be and when you’ll be there. To help out, here are our tips for surviving SXSW 2015. This blog is part two of our four-part SXSW blog series that will span throughout February, with one blog going up each week. If you missed it, part one covered the history of the festival.

5 Speakers to Hear at SXSW 2015 Interactive

This year there will be over 600 sessions at SXSW Interactive. The majority of the sessions were picked via users on the SXSW PanelPicker, with more than 3,000 ideas entered. The result is a variety of influential speakers in categories such as Art, Science, and Inspiration, Branding and Marketing, Content and Distribution, Fashion, Gaming, and Sports – and that’s just a short list. While there are many speakers we would love to hear, we’ve narrowed down a list of 5.
