SXSW is canceled for the first time in 34 years and all of Austin (and what seems like the rest of the world) is scrambling. Whether you planned on working the festival or attending as a guest, you’ve probably suffered a loss in one way or another. For attendees, refunds won’t be available as the festival is expected to go on at a later date. However, there remains a financial uncertainty for many small businesses, vendors, artists, and freelancers who expected a large portion of their income to come from this event. As expected, Austinites have banded together in efforts to support those who are affected by this cancellation. Here’s how you can help:
Since our last blog post regarding the COVID-19 virus, from March 13, 2020, we have seen the #socialdistancing phenomenon emerge, a recommendation to limit gatherings to 50 people and then to 10 people, and now we just have to stay inside. We’ve seen the closure of “non-essential” businesses across the country and already, we are seeing business closures and grocery store droughts happening across Austin. The City of Austin recently prohibited gatherings of over 10 people inside and outside (with the exception of governmental, educational, and medical spaces) and sit-ins at restaurants, bars, cafes, etc. Businesses are limited to providing to-go services only. Because Austin is a major hub for the food and drink industry, especially during the SXSW season, local businesses are suffering more than ever. As Austinites, we want to help as much as possible.
No matter how long your business has been around, nothing is quite as rewarding as watching your company grow right before your eyes. It was a Friday afternoon and the HMG team were all hands on deck clearing out the old office at South 2nd street- our home of three years. We did what we could with it and we made it our own with touches like our famous hand-painted mural (pictured below). We shared this space with our friends at Workhorse, who we’d like to thank for being awesome officemates over the years.

It’s finally Fall! It’s that time of the year when we take our sweaters out of boxes (even though it’s still 100 degrees in Austin, TX) and consume pumpkin-spice flavored everything, despite what the haters say. As October 31st approaches, we could all use a fun night out to get us in the Halloween spirit! We have entertainment options for everyone, on the big screen AND the small screen, in-person, and even up close and personal!

Plus, most are completely free to enter!
If you’re anything like us, you know that living in a city with as much culinary excellence as Austin is both a blessing and a curse. Out of all the cities in the U.S., Austin was ranked number 2 for having the most exciting food scene, second only to L.A. (ok we’ll give you that, Californians). That means an endless list of options, guaranteed to infinitely delight and – at some point – strike you with the cruel plague of indecision.
